Bassoon, Piano +1 more Teacher
Hello! My name is Austin Wegener and I am a bassoonist and composer based in New York City. Originally from Southern California, I moved to NYC for school and have not been able to tear myself away. I have a conservatory education in orchestral and chamber playing but also have a diverse background in many styles and genres including jazz and free improvisation. In addition to this, I am a historical bassoonist and play the baroque and classical bassoons as well as the dulcian (the predecessor to the bassoon). In terms of technically playing the bassoon, I personally struggled a lot with tension and pain when I was in high school and undergrad and had to develop a way to find ease and comfort in playing. I ended up finding this through a combination of breath support exercises and alexander technique and these things deeply influence my playing and teaching. I am looking forward to meeting you and making some music together! My schedule is flexible so even if there is a time or day is not listed here please still reach out, it is quite possible I can make some sort of accommodation!
My goal is to meet the student where they are and uplift them from their. I feel as a teacher I have two fundamental goals: to provide information and support the student. To this end I want to develop a way of communicating with each student that allows for the most clear and easy sharing of ideas. I also want to allow the student, within what we are working on, to guide the conversation and curriculum based on their own needs and interests. Whether a student has desires to go to conservatory and become a professional musician or is learning for solely their own enjoyment my goal is to provide them with the tools to achieve what they want. I am happy to teach all ages and skill levels and any level of ambition.
