Austin Wegener

Hello! My name is Austin Wegener and I am a bassoonist and composer based in New York City. Originally from Southern California, I moved to NYC for school and have not been able to tear myself away. I have a conservatory education in orchestral and chamber playing but also have a diverse background in many styles and genres including jazz and free improvisation. In addition to this, I am a historical bassoonist and play the baroque and classical bassoons as well as the dulcian (the predecessor to the bassoon). In terms of technically playing the bassoon, I personally struggled a lot with tension and pain when I was in high school and undergrad and had to develop a way to find ease and comfort in playing. I ended up finding this through a combination of breath support exercises and alexander technique and these things deeply influence my playing and teaching. I am looking forward to meeting you and making some music together!
