About Me

Hi! My name is Kristen. I would love to be your child's music teacher! I teach private voice and piano lessons. I have been teaching music for over 25 years. I went to Manhattanville University and have a Master's Degree in music education. I was an elementary music teacher for 23 years. I have experience teaching music theory, ear training, music history, solfege, and so much more. I love working with children and sharing my joy of music!

How I Teach

My approach to private voice and piano instruction is centered on developing confident, well-rounded musicians in a supportive and encouraging environment. I believe students learn best when lessons are tailored to their individual goals, learning styles, musical interests, and current abilities. Individualized Instruction Each student brings different strengths, challenges, interests, and goals to their lessons. I begin by getting to know the student as a musician and as an individual, then develop instruction that is appropriately challenging while remaining achievable and motivating. Whether a student is a beginner, preparing for an audition or performance, or pursuing more advanced musical development, lessons are adapted to meet their specific needs. Voice Instruction In voice lessons, I emphasize healthy and sustainable vocal technique, including breath management, posture, vocal coordination, pitch accuracy, diction, tone production, and musical expression. Technical exercises are connected directly to repertoire so that students understand how vocal skills apply to actual music. I also encourage students to develop their own artistic voice by exploring phrasing, interpretation, dynamics, and performance skills. Piano Instruction Piano lessons incorporate technique, music reading, rhythm, ear training, theory, and repertoire. I aim to help students become independent musicians who understand what they are playing rather than simply memorizing notes. Depending on the student's level and interests, lessons may include classical repertoire, popular music, accompaniment, improvisation, or other styles. Building Musical Independence A major goal of my teaching is to help students become increasingly independent. I encourage them to listen critically, identify areas that need improvement, practice with purpose, and develop problem-solving strategies. Rather than simply telling students what to do, I guide them toward understanding how to recognize and solve musical challenges themselves. Encouragement and Accountability I strive to create a positive lesson environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. At the same time, I believe meaningful progress requires consistent practice and effort. I set clear, realistic expectations and help students establish practical practice habits and goals. Creativity and Performance Music should be both disciplined and enjoyable. I make room for creativity, musical exploration, and student choice while also developing the skills necessary for successful performance. Opportunities to perform, when appropriate, help students build confidence, stage presence, and the ability to communicate effectively through music. Ultimately, my goal is not only to teach students how to sing or play an instrument, but to help them develop confidence, curiosity, musical independence, and a lasting appreciation for music.
