My name is Kanaan Distant, and I am a vocalist and composer. Born and raised in New York City. I am a senior at Binghamton University, pursuing a bachelor's degree in music composition. I am currently the president of an R&B singing in Binghamton University called Undivided, and I've been a music director for two years. I have three years of experience teaching music and singing to students in K-12. I believe that singing is healing to the mind and soul when done with passion. I want to help students improve their skills and techniques to share their passion with others.
My teaching approach is very hands-on. I focus on guiding students to develop their own understanding of vocal health by applying multiple concepts of vocal techniques, rather than simply lecturing. I adapt to my students' needs by asking for regular feedback and assessing how well they grasp the material.
When teaching, I emphasize the importance of the knowledge of solfege and ear training to start with basic understandings of music. I prioritize vowel differentiation, posture, and clarity to facilitate vocal health. Every student is different; because of this, I work tirelessly to find different ways of helping my students in any way I can. I always acknowledge that mistakes happen along the way, but mistakes are necessary for improvement and growth.
