My teaching style is supportive, structured, and individualized. I combine healthy vocal technique with practical performance skills to help students build confidence, musicianship, and expressive artistry. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, from beginners to advanced singers preparing for performances, auditions, or career opportunities.
I adapt each lesson to the student’s age, goals, learning style, level, and musical interests. I teach ages 6 to 70, from beginners to advanced singers, in theatre, classical, rock, pop, and gospel. I adjust pacing, exercises, language, and repertoire as needed, including for learning differences. Confidence-building is central to my approach, with clear praise and constructive, encouraging corrections.
My teaching approach centers on meeting each student where they are and helping them grow with confidence, clarity, and healthy technique. Every singer comes into lessons with a different voice, personality, background, and set of goals, so I tailor my instruction to the individual rather than using a one-size-fits-all method. In lessons, I focus on vocal health, breath support, tone, range, resonance, pitch, musicality, performance confidence, and artistic expression. I want students to understand how their voice works so they can sing with more freedom, consistency, and confidence. My teaching style is structured, encouraging, and practical, with clear feedback students can actually apply. I work with singers in classical voice, opera, musical theatre, pop, rock, contemporary styles, audition preparation, and performance coaching. Because my own background spans opera, classical music, musical theatre, rock, and crossover singing, I help students build a strong technical foundation while still honoring the style of music they love. For younger students, I keep lessons age-appropriate, focused, and supportive. I pay attention to how each student learns and how much information they can absorb at one time, breaking vocal concepts down in a way that feels clear rather than overwhelming. For teen and adult students, I also help with repertoire choices, audition preparation, interpretation, stage presence, and developing a stronger artistic identity. My formal music studies began at Grand Rapids Community College, where I studied Classical Voice and Music Education and was selected for the Honors Recital. During my time there, I built a strong foundation in classical vocal technique, musicianship, performance, and music education. I later transferred to Berklee College of Music, where I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Music Studies. My Berklee education allowed me to expand beyond my classical foundation into a broader, more flexible musical path that includes contemporary voice, crossover styles, performance, music business, and artistic development. This combination of classical training, contemporary music education, and professional performance experience gives me a versatile teaching approach. In addition to my classical and opera work, I have also performed extensively in rock and symphonic metal, which gives me a practical understanding of how to help singers approach powerful styles with more awareness and vocal care. I also serve as a Berklee College of Music Mentor and as a board member with West Michigan Opera Project, allowing me to support students not only as vocalists, but as developing musicians, artists, and performers. Above all, I believe singing is personal. A student’s voice is not just an instrument; it is part of who they are. My goal is for each student to leave lessons feeling more capable, more inspired, and more connected to their own voice.
