I'm Stefanos Athinaios, a professional drummer, percussionist, and educator based in New York City. I've been playing and teaching for over 15 years, working with students from age 6 to 70, and performing across the US and Europe as a session and touring musician. I'm a Berklee College of Music graduate (B.M. Percussion Performance), an alum of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, and I have studied with players like Jamey Haddad, Dave DiCenso, Mark Walker, and Victor Wooten. My playing draws on drum set fundamentals as well as Middle Eastern, Balkan, Mediterranean, and North African percussion, which I blend into hybrid setups for jazz fusion, world music, and studio work. I've made 200+ recordings for artists, film, and TV, and performed at festivals, jazz clubs, and cultural institutions worldwide, including the Athens Epidaurus Festival and SPLICE Festival. Teaching is where all of that experience actually gets useful to someone else. I work with drummers and percussionists at every level, from a first-timer picking up sticks for the first time to working musicians looking to expand into world percussion, odd meters, or improvisation. I've also spent years teaching kids, including students with learning differences, so I know how to adjust pacing and language without losing the substance of what's being taught. Beyond my private studio, I've served as a visiting artist for Berklee's Global String Summer Program and as a workshop leader for Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop, Berklee's World Musician Series Association, and El Sistema programs, focusing on ensemble playing, rhythmic literacy, and cross-cultural approaches to rhythm. I'm also active in NYC's Greek, World and Mediterranean music community and continue to perform regularly around the city while building out my teaching studio. I'm looking forward to meeting students eager to learn and, most importantly, have fun. Feel free to reach out with any questions!
My most important goal is for my students to have fun. Technique matters, but only because it's the thing that lets a player express what they actually want to say on the instrument. I'd rather spend a lesson getting a student to groove convincingly than drilling a rudiment in isolation with no musical context. Every student gets a plan built around their goals, not a fixed curriculum. That might mean: - Foundational drum set: grip, coordination, reading, groove vocabulary across styles (rock, funk, jazz, Latin) - World percussion: darbuka, riq, frame drums, tapan/davul, and Balkan/Middle Eastern rhythmic concepts including odd meters - Improvisation and phrasing: how to solo and interact musically, not just play patterns - Audition and performance prep: for school programs, ensembles, or professional opportunities - Recording and arranging: mic'ing, layering, and writing percussion parts for a session or a track For younger students, I keep lessons interactive and age-appropriate, building fundamentals through games and short, achievable goals so the early stages stay fun instead of frustrating. For older beginners and returning players, I move faster and focus on getting them playing along to real music as soon as possible, since that's usually what got them interested in the first place. For advancing or professional-track students, we go deep into technique, theory, and the specific rhythmic traditions they want to develop, informed by my own touring and recording background. I send students home with material to actually practice with, including play-alongs, reference recordings, and short written notes after each lesson, and I'm available between sessions for quick questions. Through our lessons, I hope to help each student develop their own musical voice and the confidence to use it, whether that's on a stage, in a recording session, or just playing for the joy of it.
