Music is my whole life. I started piano lessons when I was 5 years old and voice lessons when I was 7. When deciding on a career, I picked teaching music because it perfectly intersects two major parts of my personality- my love for music and my knack for helping others. I am a certified K-12 music teacher who holds both a Bachelors and a Masters in music education. I have taught in K-12 public school music classrooms and in private lesson settings--but I prefer the personal student-teacher connection that one-on-one lessons provide. I am classically trained in both piano and voice. As for piano performance, I have won several international piano competitions including the 2021 Charleston International Music Competition, the 2025 Charleston International Music Competition, and the 2025 Glory International Piano Competition and am now preparing for the 2027 Cleveland International Piano Competition- one of the top 5 in the world. My diverse piano repertoire includes pieces written across all time periods from Baroque to 20th century from the traditional Western canon as well as music from Spain, Latin America, and the United States. Besides solo performance, I also have experience accompanying instrumentalists and vocalists and playing in chamber ensembles. As for vocal performance, I have sung both as a soloist and in choirs—in fact, I was part of a choir nearly every semester that I was pursuing my undergraduate degree. I was also chosen to participate in my college's opera theatre production of Handel's "Giulio Cesare." My vocal repertoire includes classical art songs, opera arias, jazz, pop, musical theatre, and bossa nova. I am comfortable teaching most styles of music--so just let me know which one interests you!
I strive to make every lesson engaging and fun while also challenging each student to reach their greatest potential. In general, lessons typically include repertoire, technique, sight reading, ear training, music theory, and improvisational skills. However, the curriculum can be adjusted according to each student's goals. During the first lesson, I always do a quick assessment to find out the student's goals and how they learn best so that I can tailor my teaching techniques. Younger students often play games during lessons that reinforce the concepts being taught. Older students may choose their piece(s) from a leveled list--they tend to be more motivated to practice songs that they truly enjoy and want to learn. I have found that nearly all students love improv- their eyes light up when they make their own music! So I often end lessons with some improvisatory activities.
