Trumpet Teacher
Welcome to Thoven! My name is Jatin Himatsinghani - I am a trumpeter and composer based in New York City. Originally from Dallas, Texas, I started playing the trumpet at the age of 11 for my middle school band, wanting to become the best at it shortly after starting. That mere desire for victory through competition later on evolved to a genuine love for music through the trumpet, at first through jazz and later on through classical music as well. At the age of 18, I was the recipient of multiple Downbeat Magazine Awards, specifically for Best Small Jazz Combo, Best Blues/Pop/Rock Group, Best Large Jazz Ensemble, and Best Virtual Big Band. I also was selected for the 2020 Jazz Band of America, and selected as a finalist for the 25th Annual Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival. At the age of 13 I decided that I wanted to study at the Juilliard School for Classical Trumpet Performance, and after a few years I ended up auditioning and getting accepted while also becoming a recipient of the Pablo Manalang Scholarship, as well as the Ida and William Rosenthal Scholarship. In 2022, I was a Semi-Finalist for the National Trumpet Competition for Classical Solo Trumpet and a Semi-Finalist in the 2024 National Trumpet Competition for Jazz Solo Trumpet.
Learning is teaching and teaching is learning. My process for teaching is interpersonal, as I feel from my fortunate experience the greatest teachers I have had have always been mentors to me and have become beacons of inspiration to me in a way that doesn't just have to do with their musicianship, but also having to do with the content of their character. While we will certainly work on the fundamentals—mastering scales, polishing technique and beauty of sound, and preparing etudes for State competitions—my teaching goes far deeper than the technical requirements. I believe the lessons learned in the practice room are priceless lessons for life. Through the trumpet, I teach my students how to: Embrace the Unknown: We learn to face difficult music with courage rather than fear. Value the Process: We put our energy into the process of creating the music, rather than putting our energy into the necessity of an outcome. Adapt with Empathy: Music teaches us to empathize with others by listening deeply and adapting to our surroundings—a skill that translates directly to how we interact with the world around us. There are more profound lessons that apply to all pursuits of life through this journey of mastering expression through the trumpet, and all because of that first decision of picking up that shiny piece of metal one day!
I believe that every commitment is a string of processes that is driven by faith to capture a dream. Whatever student I am with, I must first understand what the student wants to achieve so that I am clear of how I believe in spending my time with them in the lessons. This does not mean that I expect every student to know what they want - some do, some don't - but perhaps the achievement may be then to explore music on the trumpet and to discover what they enjoy with it, as well as what they may not. Then after knowing the objective of the students, I will give a structure that I believe best benefits the students commitment to fulfill the objective. An example of this would be if a student who is just learning about music and the trumpet wanted to audition for the highest band in their school for the next year, I would provide material on musical notation and music created for beginner trumpeters, work on the material with the student in the lesson, and ask him/her to prepare specific sections of the material and to bring it to me the next week at a pace that I believe is best for the student. I would then create a way to structure out when and how to practice when the student is working on the material alone. I have been teaching ever since I was in middle school. It of course did not start professionally: After school, the other students would be practicing pieces that they would have to pass off for their band classes, and since I was heavily invested in trumpet early on, I would regularly help the students in 6th and 7th grade after school when I was in 8th. I would be staying at school until 6-6:30 PM practicing and helping the other students. In my last couple of years of high school, I was also invited to teach the trumpeters in the middle school that I had gone to, helping out trumpet section in the jazz band by leading sectionals. This all turned out to be fruitful as I began privately teaching as I entered Conservatory, helping my students get into Texas All State for both Classical and Jazz. One of them was a French Horn player in the band but picked up the trumpet and that same year wanted to apply for jazz trumpet for the school's jazz band and All State; he made both.
