I use solfege, singing, and ear training as a tool for every student, no matter which instrument. I also give weekly composition assignments. In lessons, we will discover personal performance style, how to engage an audience, and expressive techniques which allow students to tackle repertoire from every possible angle before making it their own. I help voice students to approach all genres with a physical ease and openness.
Spoiler alert!! I'm always asking students "what do you want the live experience to be like for the audience?" The practice room is NOT a vacuum at all, but a lab where we get to develop your identity as a performer and bring it to the next level. I want you to be excited about the repertoire we choose, because there's no better feeling than stepping up to perform feeling like you really *own* the work you've done. And whether we're working on piano, voice, or both, we'll work on composition, arranging, and theory skills so that you can better bring the vision for your performances to life. We'll explore the cultural, emotional, political, and stylistic context behind pieces of music (and musical techniques, as well!). I've discovered it's easier to mix and match and jumble approaches to music when you have a good foundational vocabulary. Students come to me because I encourage self expression and radical creativity at every step of the process, from discovering the building blocks of scales, to singing their favorite song with total control, to composing something of their own.
