Harp Teacher
Hello! My name is Elizabeth Currier, and I am a freelance harpist and a current graduate student at Middle Tennessee State University, pursuing a Master's degree in Music with a specialization in Harp Performance. My passion for musical storytelling has shaped my musical and academic pursuits, enabling me to create captivating programs that enthrall my audiences. As an orchestral musician, I have served as principal harpist at Oberlin, including during major orchestral tours, and I also have experience serving as a substitute musician for regional orchestras. I am a recent graduate of Oberlin Conservatory with a B.M. in Harp Performance. My former teachers include Diane Evans, Yolanda Kondonassis, and Joan Raeburn Holland. My recent awards include Finalist for the Oberlin Conservatory Senior Concerto Competition. Looking forward, I aim to intertwine my passion for teaching with my love of musical storytelling.
My teaching style is student-centered, drawing heavily on standard harp technique and methods, but also incorporating music theory, aural skills, and necessary music history context. For every student, I tailor specific lesson strategies that help them develop strong technique, note reading, rhythm, and musical expression, enabling them to grow their independence as musicians. From the beginning, I adapt each concept to each student's learning style and pace, with the long-term goal of helping them become better musicians by building their confidence, musicality, and technique. Overall, my goal is to create a lesson environment that fosters growth and allows for each student to learn how to express themselves through music.
My teaching philosophy centers on allowing each student to come as they are and helping them grow with purpose, confidence, and clarity. I integrate music theory, music history, and aural skills in a practical and accessible way, enabling my students to understand how music works and apply that knowledge to their practice and interpretation of music. Each harpist is unique, so lessons are tailored to each student's individual experience, goals, learning style, and physical limitations, rather than forcing students to fit into a one-size-fits-all approach. Alongside healthy harp technique, I also integrate performance practice techniques and practical practicing advice so that each of my students can build a solid foundation for improvement and growth. Through clear communication, constructive feedback, and a supportive lesson environment, I strive to help students build strong musical foundations, confidence, and artistic independence, while leaving each lesson feeling encouraged and excited about their progress.
